Coleshill Project gets backing of the community

Coleshill is celebrating success this week after reaching its target to fundraise over £24,000 for its Community Artspace project.

Money was raised through a Civic Crowdfunding Platform called ‘Spacehive’ where it received a £12,000 boost from the ‘Warwickshire Together’ Fund.  The fund, provided by Warwickshire County Council as part of its town centres support package, is for projects aimed at enhancing and supporting the town centres of Warwickshire.

As part of fundraising activity, local residents and businesses were asked to vote for their favourite theme as well as pledge money and time to show their support.  The voting was conclusive and will see the return of a Highwayman to Coleshill, reflecting folklore stories in the town although this time it is hoped the ‘Highwayman’ will be holding people up in a more positive fashion by providing an entertaining addition to the town.

After a flurry of activity over Christmas and New Year to achieve its funding by the deadline, the people and businesses of Coleshill can now look forward to getting their creative hats on to decide how and where the character should feature in and around the town.

Leader of the County Council and Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth, Councillor Izzi Seccombe said “This is the first scheme to achieve funding from the Warwickshire Together Fund and we are delighted to see it awarded to Coleshill.

“The project has captured the imaginations of many people in the town and the resulting piece will contribute towards the bigger aim of enhancing the experience for visitors and shoppers to our towns and high streets.

“Using ‘Spacehive’ – the Civic Crowdfunding platform – to deliver our funding pot means that communities can have much more say on what and how projects are delivered in their towns because they put the ideas forward and pledge their support to a project online.  This makes the projects much more ‘visible’ and encourages community buy-in which is a very different approach to the traditional grant funding application process.”

Spacehive is a civic crowdfunding platform that encourages community engagement and gives communities the opportunity to raise funds for projects within their area. It connects great project ideas to the people, local authorities, businesses and grant-makers ready and willing to fund them.
